The master of the Remsen arsenal, Ivaylo Ivanov, has been charged with criminal weapons possession for his arsenal and with aggravated harassment as a hate crime for the swastika spraying spree he went on last year in Brooklyn Heights. Ivanov was busted and his arsenal uncovered on January 20 at the apartment he shared with AIDS researcher Dr. Michael Clatts. He later confessed to defacing local synagogues in 2007. Cops add that Ivanov also distributed hate-filled fliers in the neighborhood as well.
Newsday: Prosecutors Charge…: Ivanov subsequently made statements implicating himself in the vandalism, police had said previously. They described him as a Bulgarian national who came to the United States 15 years ago. Ivanov's attorney has said his client is Jewish.
Ivanov pleaded not guilty at an arraignment last week on charges of aggravated harassment and criminal mischief as a hate crime, as well as criminal possession of a weapon and reporting a false incident. Bail was set at $300,000 bond or $150,000 cash.
Rabbi Serge Lippe, of the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, called the Ivanov case "something of a nightmare, and when you see the capacity of the individual in front of you, the nightmare gets a lot worse."
